Manchester United and Arsenal have reportedly struck a deal which sees Arsene Wenger’s talisman Alexis Sanchez swap the Emirates for Old Trafford with Henrikh Mkhitaryan going in the other direction.

The BBC’s Simon Stone has reported that the only current hold-up on the Sanchez deal is down to work permit changes.

Jose Mourinho is undoubtedly getting the better end of the deal. In Sanchez, United are getting a proven world class forward who is capable of scoring in excess of 20 goals a season, can play anywhere across the front three, and even as an attacking midfielder. United severely lacked creativity, whilst Paul Pogba was out injured earlier in the season with Romelu Lukaku struggling to score goals without the Frenchman’s service.

With the introduction of Sanchez, it is hoped that the weight of expectation will be somewhat lifted of the shoulders of United’s record signing Pogba and give the Red Devils an increased amount creativity which they desperately need.

The 29-year-old also fits the Mourinho player profile due to his extremely high work rate on and off the ball. Another positive for United is that the Chilean won’t be on his way to rivals Manchester City, which was the deal everyone was expecting.

Reports suggested that Sanchez had verbally agreed a contract with City worth £290,000 a week and would either move for £20 million in January or in the summer for free. However, it’s now expected Chile’s all time top scorer will earn £100,000 a week more than he would have on the blue side of Manchester.

Although Arsenal are losing their best player, they have arguably done a good job in damage limitation. Mkhitaryan is a player that Arsene Wenger has previously been interested in during his time at Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Dortmund.

The Armenian, like Sanchez, is a versatile attacker with considerable creativity and an eye for goal. During his time under Jose Mourinho he has not shown the kind of form which saw him consistently enter double digits for goals and assists during his time at Shakhtar and Dortmund.

Ex-Man United man Phil Neville talking to Radio 5 Live, tipped Armenia’s captain to succeed in North London saying: “He needs to go to a club where he will be allowed to flourish and maybe Arsenal is that club.”
