Cricket Top Three: Who has impressed in the series win over Sri Lanka so far

It’s been such a long time since England have won away so this series win has been a long time coming. With many new faces and a new era starting without Alastair Cook opening the batting, England showed that they can win abroad without senior players, with Stuart Broad also sitting out the first two matches.

Here are the three players that I believe have been England’s best performers in the first two test matches.

Jack Leach:

The Somerset spinner has really showed his worth in the test team in the two matches he has played in. His performance particularly in the second test was brilliant considering he took five wickets in the second innings. After missing out on selection for the India test series in August, he really proved to cricket fans that he is indeed good enough to play at test level.

Although all three of the spinners played have all done well, Leach has stood out and taken the most wickets. He has by far been the best bowler for England in this series which could result in a more regular run in the side.

Ben Foakes:

What a debut series for the Surrey wicket-keeper batsman. There may still be one more match left in the series, but Foakes has already shown that he is suited to this of cricket. A century on his debut in the first match and a well fought for fifty in the second match has shown to all the England cricket fans that he is most certainly here to stay. As well as his batting abilities, his keeping has also been outstanding.

Considering that he was only called into the team as back-up for Jonny Bairstow, who picked up an injury during the ODI series, this has been an impressive introduction to test cricket and has made almost undroppable in most peoples eyes, including mine. England are blessed to have such options in the wicket-keeping department having Jos Buttler in the ranks as well as, but Foakes stepped up when England were up to their usual collapsing tricks.

Joe Root:

An important thing about being a captain is leading by example and Joe Root definitely did so during the second test. His score of 124 in the second innings helped England to build a big enough to help beat Sri Lanka. It has been debated whether this was one of Root’s best centuries and I think that it is one of his most impressive and important centuries that he has scored.

Since he became captain in 2017, his batting seemed to have suffered a lot. He has only scored four centuries since becoming captain. However, he show take a lot of confidence from his knock in the last match and hopefully be more consistent with his run scoring.

Special mention:

I can’t really write a list like this and exclude Sam Curran, who scores runs for fun especially when England needs them the most. He has impressed immensely since his debut in the final test against Pakistan in June.

The final match of the series starts on 23rd November in Colombo.
