Before their 2-1 win over Carlisle on Saturday, Mark Cooper’s side were without a win in five games after a solid start to the season. But the three points they won in Cumbria leaves them within touching distance of not only the play-offs, but the automatic promotion spots, too.
They’re just one point off sixth and two points off third, so a win over Colchester on Tuesday could be a huge moment in their season.
Ipswich loanee Ben Morris seems to be finding his feet under Cooper, and bagged his first goal for the club alongside a man of the match performance on Saturday.
Colchester started the season in emphatic style, and have found themselves amongst the early promotion chasers.
A 1-0 win over top of the league Lincoln City a couple of weeks ago was a real statement of intent, and they’ll be looking to build on that with a win in Gloucestershire.
A player familiar to these parts is U’s midfielder Harry Pell, who ended his three-year spell at Cheltenham Town to join Colchester in the summer. Another key man for John McGreal is attacking midfielder Sammie Szmodics, who’s already scored six goals this season, and has been linked with Premier League side Bournemouth.
These two met for the first time ever last season, and it was Colchester who came out on top on both occasions. They won 5-1 in Essex and 2-1 at the New Lawn during the 2017/18 campaign, but Forest Green will be looking to seek revenge on Tuesday night.
